Deployment of military to bring the situation under control

A protest was being held by students in Bangladesh against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s governments reservations system.

Indian government declined to comment in this issue saying that it is an internal affair of Bangladesh. However, Indians in the neighbouring country are safe and sound.

Protestors argue that system is discriminatory and benefits only to the kin of veterans and not others in nation and they want this system to be replaced with merit based system.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina defended the quota system, and thus the protest turned out to be the violent act, destroying the public and private property, thus setting the country on fire.

Around 105 deaths has been reported along with 1500 people injured in protest. The country has imposed curfew to bring the situation under control.

In Bangladesh there are around 15000 Indians residing out of which 8500 are students. External affairs ministry spokeperson Randhir Jaiswal said that,”we see this as an internal matter of Bangladesh.”

He further said,”All our Indian nationals are safe there. We have a large student crowd, many of them pursue medical education in Bangladesh.”

“They are all safe and are in contact with our high commission and assistant high commission,” he added.

Amid violent protest, Indian high commission issued an advisory to Indians that urged them not to travel outdoors and remain in homes. “In view of ongoing situation in Bangladesh, the Indian community members and the Indian students residing in Bangladesh are advised to avoid travel and minimize their movement outside their living premises,” the advisory stated. Indian students are advised to contact the high commission in Dhaka in case of any emergency or need.

External affair minister S. Jayshankar is also having a watch on the situation in Bangladesh. “We remain committed to provide all possible assistance to our nationals,” Jaiswal told media.

Due to violence and to bring the situation under control, Bangladesh government has shut down internet services. However, we are in contact with the Indian nationals through communication, Jaiswal said.

“I would urge family members of Indians in Bangladesh to follow us for latest developments,” he said.
