Nipah virus confirmed, 14 year old boy in Malappuram of Kerala tested positive

A 14 year old boy in Kerala has been confirmed to be infected with Nipah virus. A boy is residential of Malappuram district. Kerala Government confirmed the case of Nipah Virus on Saturday.

The child is in critical condition and is been shifted to government medical college, Kozhikode .
The boy showed symptoms of fever on July 10 and he took treatment at a local clinic. He was admitted in hospital at Pandikkad. But due to reports confirmed the Nipah virus, he was shifted to Kozhikode.

This Nipah virus infection is transferred from animals like pig and half eaten fruits by birds, especially bats. It can also be transmitted by direct contact between people.

Symptoms of this infection includes, fever, vomiting and difficulty in breathing causing respiratory infection. In case of severe illness, symptoms involve seizure and brain inflammations leading to coma and unfortunately death.

National Institute of Virology has been confirmed the infection of Nipah virus in boy, said Kerala Health Minister Veena George. The boy is at a ventilator and is in critical condition. Unfortunately there are no vaccines for Nipah virus.

According to PTI, George said,”He will be transferred to the government medical college at Kozhikode. The tracing of contacts have been started.

The parents of the child have been isolated due to high risk of infection. “A 3 km radius from the centre of Pankkad will be monitored strictly and restrictions will be imposed,” said Health minister Veena George.

People are been asked to wear the mask and avoid visiting in crowded places. Health department has asked people to not eat half eaten fruit of birds and stay hygienic. The health department has came into action mode. The situation is under control. The Standard operating procedures has been set up for controlling the spread of this infection.

In Kerala, it is threatening condition and may cause death. 17 people were died due to Nipah viral infection in 2018, in Kerala.

The outbreak of this infection have taken 4 times previously in Kerala like 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023. Now it has taken up its head again in 2024 causing serious threat to the health of child.
